This tutorial will explain how to Atheros AR5007EG or AR242x wireless cards working in Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex).First you need to compile latest ath5k driver using the following procedure.Use one of the following method.Select Qualcomm Atheros network driver. Choose the driver depending on the newer operating system. The following table provides drivers for Atheros network devices and the operating systems Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10. The Ubuntu operating system is a free and secure choice for your company's workstations. However, sometimes hardware compatibility can become an issue -- for example, if your computers use Atheros.
In the past when I’ve experienced this type of behavior with the Atheros driver in previous versions of (K)Ubuntu, installing the linux-backports-modules always fixed the problem, but such is not the case with Meerkat. Unfortunately, until a fix for this comes out, this netbook is basically usable primarily as a paperweight with Ubuntu 10.10.
Preparing your system
sudo aptitude install build-essential
This will install all the required compilers.
Method 1
Now you need to download the latest wireless drivers from here using the following command
wget http://wireless.kernel.org/download/compat-wireless-2.6/compat-wireless-2.6.tar.bz2
Now you have compat-wireless-2.6.tar.bz2 file you need to extract this file using the following command from the terminal
sudo tar -jxvf compat-wireless-2.6.tar.bz2
Move to the directory you extracted in terminal
cd directoryname
Run the following commands
make
sudo make install
sudo make unload
sudo make load
Uninstall drivers
If you want to uninstall cd in to the wireless drivers directory path and use the following commands
sudo make unload
sudo make uninstall
Method 2
if you are on Intrepid and still cannot use wifi with an Atheros card , you need to do two things, 1) install linux-backport-modules and 2) blacklist ath_pci and ath_hal.
To install the backport modules, just search for it on Synaptic or use apt-get or aptitude, it's called linux-backports-modules-intrepid. Then on System/Administration/Hardware Drivers make sure Atheros driver is activated.
sudo aptitude install linux-backports-modules-intrepid
For Jaunty Users run the following comamnd
sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-jaunty
Komplete audio 6 control panel downloads. I will keep this in mind going forward. Robert_e_bone 2.
To blacklist the old modules, do this:
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
And add the following lines At the bottom of the file save and exit
blacklist ath_hal
blacklist ath_pci
blacklist ath_pci
Now you need to reboot your system.
IF after this steps you still cannot make it work, you probably have something left still blacklisting ath5k, thus making it not to load. You should search all the files on /etc/modprobe.d for all lines that had:
blacklist ath5k
And add a # before the start of the line, thus making it into a comment so the above one becomes
# blacklist ath5k
Save and exit the file
I hope this help for some one to fix their wireless problem.

The Ubuntu operating system is a free and secure choice for your company's workstations. However, sometimes hardware compatibility can become an issue -- for example, if your computers use Atheros wireless cards, you might find that a stock Ubuntu installation does not connect to a wireless network. Download and compile a wireless compatibility package module for Ubuntu in order to install the drivers for the Atheros card.
1.Insert the Atheros Wireless card into your motherboard, and plug in your monitor. The details of this process vary between computer manufacturers, so consult your computer's documentation.
3.Download the compat-wireless Linux tools and save the '.tar.bz2' file to your desktop (link in Resources).
4.Click the Ubuntu dash symbol, type 'terminal' into the search bar, then click on the terminal icon in the search results.
5.Navigate to your desktop using the following command, where 'username' represents your username on the Ubuntu system:
Wireless Drivers For Ubuntu
cd /home/username/Desktop
6.Enter the following command in the terminal to install the necessary compilation tools:
sudo apt-get install build-essential checkinstall
7.Enter the following series of commands, each followed by a press of the 'Enter' key, to unzip the compat-wireless package with the 'tar' command, compile it and install it to the kernel. Note that your compat-wireless file may be a different version with a different name, so '' represents the version in the file name:
tar -xjvf compat-wireless-.tar.bz2 cd ./compat-wireless* scripts/driver-select atl1c make sudo make install sudo modprobe atl1c
Each command is followed by some output; let the output finish before entering the next command.
8.Reboot the computer to use the Atheros wireless card.
