64-bit Download
Hello,
I would like to ask a very specific set of questions about installing the Digital River Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit Upgrade.
I have a PC that meets all the requirements for the aforementioned version of Windows 7, but is currently running Windows XP Professional SP3 32-Bit. Digital River advised that upgrading from XP to 7 would require a Custom Install, which was fine. However, Microsoft have acknowledged that there are problems encountered when trying to do so when moving from a 32-Bit OS to a 64-Bit one.
The NORMAL procedure (i.e. 32-Bit XP to 32-Bit 7), as I understand it, would be to simply run the downloaded files and choose Custom Install when the option presented itself. However, this is not possible in my situation. Indeed, I am prevented from even extracting the files in the first place.
When I run the downloaded files, the extraction finishes, but gives the following error:
'An error has occurred. Unspecified error.'
I have read the response thread to this issue, and Microsoft have suggested re-downloading the files, which I am currently doing. However, there still exists the issue of what I need to do AFTER this.
Assuming I am able to get past the 'unspecified error', I am still going to be presented with the more common extraction error:
'We are unable to create or save new files in the folder in which this application was downloaded.'
This essentially means that (since I did not order a backup DVD), I will have to use Command Prompt to create a bootable ISO, then burn that ISO to DVD. Here are where my questions come into play.
1) Are Microsoft supporting the use of the oscdimg.exe method, since Digital River have yet to respond to any of my emails regarding the support they're supposed to provide?
2) Can Microsoft assure me that the ISO created with this tool will be error free and contain all the files required to install Windows 7, despite the extraction error?
3) When I have burned the ISO to DVD using the Microsoft Tool provided, do I need to BOOT from this DVD, or can I run it from within Windows?
4) When choosing the method of installation, I understand that I need to choose 'Custom (advanced)' - is this the stage that the installer detects a 'previous version of Windows', as outlined as a requirement for the Upgrade Version of Windows 7?
5) If the installation fails for any reason - or if my Windows 7 key is rejected at any stage - where do I go for support, bearing in mind that Digital River have failed to respond to me?
6) If my Windows 7 key is rejected, but the installation process is IN PROGRESS, I won't be able to boot Windows XP or Windows 7. Will I need to / be able to re-install XP?
7) If my Windows 7 key is rejected AFTER the installation, where do I go for support? And will my XP key still be cancelled?
8) Many users are getting refunded for these issues, but as mentioned before, Digital River have not responded to any of my emails, and their website refuses to recognise my order number. Can I expect a refund for this?
Many thanks in advance to the answers to any of these questions.
